Stump Grinding Help for Homeowners
Request an estimate today
A stump is easy to ignore until someone trips on it or sprouts start popping up. If this is your first time dealing with one, the process can feel unclear. This page lists the steps in plain order, so you know what to expect before you call anyone.
Mayshooting Tree Service is a referral service. It does not grind stumps. It connects your request with independent providers in our network who serve Concord and the Concord area. You compare written quotes at your own pace, then decide with no obligation. Use the checklists below to size up your stump, prepare your yard, and ask the right questions.
First, look up: is the stump a problem right now?
Check your yard against this list.
- The stump sits near a path, driveway or play area.
- New shoots keep growing from the base.
- You see ants, termites or fungus on or around it.
- It is in the way of a fence, patio or new planting.
If you checked any box, request quotes soon. Grinding is rarely a true emergency. Trip hazards and pests are the two reasons to move first.
A quick note on storm leftovers. After storm tree clearance, a jagged stump is often what remains. Once the tree is fully down and safe, grinding is the next step.
Problems old stumps cause
Stumps seem harmless. They are not. Here is what they do, from most urgent to least.
Trips and mower damage
A low stump hides in grass. Guests, kids and pets hit it. Mower blades hit it too.
Pests and decay
Dead wood attracts ants and termites. Some of those pests can move toward nearby wood, such as fences or sheds. Dry seasons can leave stumps cracked and brittle, which makes it easy for pests to settle in.
Sprouts and roots
Many species send up shoots from the stump. Roots can also push toward pipes and slabs. Grinding the stump removes the main source of those shoots.
Blocked plans
A stump stops you from building, planting or leveling. It also makes a yard look unfinished.
How stump grinding works
Here is the usual order of a job.
1. The provider walks the yard and looks at the stump size and access. 2. Utility lines and sprinkler lines get marked or confirmed. 3. A grinder with a spinning cutting wheel shaves the stump down in layers. 4. The provider grinds several inches below ground level. 5. Wood chips are left in the hole or raked up, depending on your quote.
Small stumps can go fast. Large ones with wide roots take longer.
Stump grinding vs. full stump removal
These are two different jobs. Compare them before you decide.
- Grinding: Cuts the stump below grade. Roots stay and rot slowly. It is quicker and leaves less mess.
- Full removal: Digs out the stump and major roots. It is heavier work and leaves a large hole. It may suit you if you plan to build right on that spot.
For most lawns and gardens, grinding is enough. Ask each provider which one they suggest and why.
What affects the price
Prices vary by job. These are the usual factors.
- Stump width and height
- Number of stumps
- Root spread and hard or rocky soil
- Gate width and how far the grinder must travel
- Cleanup, such as hauling chips or adding topsoil
Get every quote in writing. Check that it lists the grinding depth and what happens to the chips.
Getting ready for grinding day
First, clear the area. Then walk through this checklist.
- Move cars, toys, furniture and planters.
- Unlock the gate and clear a path.
- Mark sprinkler heads, drip lines and buried pet fences.
- Tell the provider about any pipes or cables you know of.
- Keep pets and kids indoors during the work.
Many tract homes and older bungalows have narrow side yards. Measure your gate and tell the provider. After winter rain events, soft ground can rut, so ask about timing. During wildfire smoke seasons, ask how the provider handles dust and air quality.
Grinding stumps left from past removals
Old stumps from a past tree removal are common. Maybe a previous owner cut a tree and left the base. These are often dry and hard, which can slow the grinder. Roots may already have spread under paving or turf.
Tell the provider how old the stump is. Photos help with quoting.
What to do after grinding
Next, handle the leftovers.
1. Decide whether to keep the chips as mulch or have them hauled away. 2. Fill the hole with topsoil and pack it down. 3. Add seed, sod or a ground cover. 4. Wait before planting a new tree in the same spot, since old root bits can remain. 5. Watch for new shoots over the next few months.
Questions to ask the provider
Use this list when you compare.
- Is the quote in writing, with the price for each stump?
- How deep will you grind?
- Are cleanup and chip hauling included?
- How will you protect lawn, pipes and sprinklers?
- Do you carry insurance, and can you show proof?
- What if you hit a rock or hidden object?
Some providers also offer a tree falling service or emergency tree removal. Those are separate jobs with their own pages.
Compare, then decide
Lay your quotes side by side. Check price, depth, cleanup and timing. A low number may leave out cleanup. A high number may include extras you do not need. Take your time. There is no obligation to accept any quote.
Quote in writing, then book
Pick the quote that fits your yard and plans. Confirm the date, the access plan and the cleanup in writing. Then you are ready for grinding day.

No obligationStump Grinding Help FAQ
How long does stump grinding take?
Small stumps can take under an hour, while large stumps with wide roots take longer. Access, soil and stump size all matter. Ask your provider for a time estimate when you review the written quote.
Should I grind the stump or remove it completely?
Grinding is usually enough for lawns and gardens. Full removal digs out roots too, and it suits building on the same spot. Ask providers to price both, then compare.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Often yes, but wait a bit. Ground wood chips and old root bits can break down and settle. Many providers suggest clearing chips and adding fresh topsoil first. Ask what they recommend for your yard.
